Methodology
The PlainAttorney directory is a comprehensive index of attorney registration data sourced from state court administration agencies. Every attorney, city, and law school in this directory corresponds to a record in the source dataset, there are no editorial additions or ranked placements.
- Attorney records are loaded from the state court administration open data portal for each state we cover. New York is the first state indexed; additional states are being added as data access is confirmed.
- City indexing groups attorneys by the business address on file; cities with fewer than 5 registered attorneys are excluded to limit noise from one-off addresses.
- Law school indexing tallies alumni based on the educational institution reported at admission, with normalized naming to consolidate spelling variants under a canonical form.
- Data freshness: the directory is refreshed quarterly. The "last updated" date on each detail page reflects the last data load date, not the date a specific attorney's status was verified, always confirm current status with the state bar before hiring.
- No editorial ranking: PlainAttorney presents counts only. We do not rank, rate, or recommend individual attorneys, cities, or schools. Any ordering reflects objective record counts from the source dataset.
