Citable findings

The New York Attorney Statistics page is the canonical live source. Safe reporting angles are bounded: registration status is not a fitness ranking, an office state is not a license census, and "Suspended" in this extract is mostly an administrative delinquent label.

  • 290,787 of 432,625 rows (67.2%) are Currently registered. 49,186 are Deceased and 43,128 are due to reregister within 30 days of birthday.
  • Of 261,020 rows with an office state, 163,313 (62.6%) list New York and 97,707 list another state. NY-admitted is not the same as a New York office.
  • 2,190 rows are Disbarred and 718 resigned for a disciplinary reason. 19,103 of 21,002 Suspended* rows are Suspended, delinquent.
  • New York, NY is the largest office city (93,609 rows, 4.77% registry flags). Among cities with 500 or more rows, Hackensack, NJ has the highest flag share (8.54% on 679 rows) and Garden City, NY has the lowest (0.33% on 2,096 rows). Flags include administrative Suspended, delinquent.
  • Between 2026-07-03 and 2026-08-06, 1,193 status changes include 424 due-to-reregister to Delinquent moves and 23 Suspended* to Currently registered moves.

Method and limitations

PlainAttorney ingests the New York OCA attorney-registration file published on data.ny.gov. Status labels are the source strings. Office city and state are the registered office address, not a practice-census or a count of clients.

Law-school names in the extract are free-text. Duplicate strings (Harvard Law School vs HARVARD) are not a census of ABA schools and are not used as a press finding.
